EKATERINA MADATOVA
is a Belarusian composer and arranger of choral and song genres.
Ekaterina graduated of the N.F. Sokolovsky Gomel State College of Arts (Choral Conducting Department, class of R.F. Grigorovich; 2008-2012).
She graduated from the Belarusian State Academy of Music (Vocal and Choral Department, class of Associate Professor Yu.A. Karaev, 2012-2017).
In 2018, she received a Master of Arts degree in Art History (class of Associate Professor I.M. Bodyako).
Ekaterina took her first professional steps in arranging at the Belarusian State Academy of Music (BSAM), under the guidance of teacher, conductor, and composer A.R. Savritsky, participating in competitions and winning. In 2015, she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in choral music. The Composition Department held the "Sad Songs" competition, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of G. Sviridov's birth. E. Madatova's "Mother's Prayer," based on the poems of K. Isahakyan, was awarded a first-degree diploma and also won the Audience Award. The opus made a lasting impression not only on the committee but also on the audience.
This was followed by an arrangement of "Amazing Grace" (words and music by J.Newton, J.P.Rees, E.O.Excell, C.Tomlin and L.Giglio) written for the BGAM student choir (artistic director and conductor I. Bodyako). Also in 2018, an arrangement of the song "Nezhnost’" (music by A. Pakhmutova, lyrics by S. Grebennikov and N. Dobronravov) won first place in the "Choral Arrangement of World Cinema Songs" competition at the BGAM.
From 2015 to 2022 Ekaterina worked with the "Honored Ensemble of the Republic of Belarus, the State Chamber Choir" under the direction of N. Mikhailova, the choir's soloist (2015-2022), and also served as choirmaster (2020-2022). During this period, new arrangements of well-known works were created: "Chattanooga Choo Choo" (music by H.Warren, lyrics by M.Gordon), "Pod muzyku Vival’di" (music by V. Berkovsky and S. Nikitin, words by A. Velichansky) and "Kazach’ya". The music for "Maloye slavosloviye" was written. Audiences could hear the premieres of these works at the ensemble's concerts.
In 2020, the collection "From the Whole Heart" was published, featuring sacred and secular music, as well as choral arrangements of popular songs for mixed choir.
"The melody in Ekaterina Madatova's works is as poetic as the title of this sheet music publication. It is filled with lace patterns and elegant embellishments, and sometimes with piercing melancholy and sadness." Ekaterina Levchenko (Belarusian composer and musician)
Step by step, Ekaterina's musical works, which have entered the repertoires of the Honored State Ensembles of the Republic of Belarus—the Chamber Choir (conducted by N. Mikhailova), the G. Shirma Capella (conducted by O. Yanum), and the Student Choir of the Belarusian State Academy of Music (conducted by I. Bodyako)—are becoming known abroad, winning prizes and Grand Prix awards at various choral competitions (2022-2024). Particularly popular are the works "Vosstany", "Amazing Grace," "Kazach’ya" and "Khvali dushe moya, Gospoda." The latter was written for the "Vsetsaritsa" ensemble (directed by O. Sholkova). The music for it is composed by Ekaterina herself. It was particularly popular with audiences and was featured at the international church music festival "Hajnowka 2024."
In 2021, a collection of choral music by young Belarusian composers, "Letuceni," was released. It featured new works as well as works long known to Belarusian audiences by A. Benderskaya, V. Larin, A. Kustov, O. Beisher, and E. Madatova.
As mentioned above, Ekaterina is not only a choral composer but also a songwriter. All of her songs have a distinctive, memorable melody, which is one of the key factors in creating pop music. Listener favorites include the tracks "Mama," "Mechta," and "Vedi za Soboi."
A new stage in her compositional career was reached with the creation of an anthem for the 100th anniversary of the famous Belarusian chocolate factory "Spartak." The lyrics were written in collaboration with amateur poet L. Smirnova. The anthem premiered in 2024 and was warmly received by the public.
Since 2022, Ekaterina has been working as an artist with the State Chamber Choir "Polyphony" (Šiauliai, Lithuania). From 2022 to 2024, she will perform in the "Polyphony" National Chamber Choir. She participated in a composers' competition and wrote three works that became part of the choir's repertoire.
Ekaterina continues to be active in her creative work, and her works, particularly her sacred music, are increasingly gaining audiences.
Plans include publishing a children's collection of poems by L. Smirnova and Ekaterina herself.
